Organizations: Students for Justice in Palestine, Jewish Voice for Peace
Sophia Goodfriend is a Jewish American activist and scholar. Sophia is a graduate of Tufts University, where she was an active member of Students for Justice in Palestine and helped build and sustain the University’s first Jewish Voice for Peace student group. With Jewish Voice for Peace she published the zine ‘Whose Birthright’ which exposed the ongoing histories of Palestinian displacement and Zionist occupation and settlement often erased on Birthright Israel tours.
As a graduate student exploring forms of Judaism decoupled from Zionism, she continues to study and write on questions pertaining to settler colonialism and nationalism. Her work has been published in the Electronic Intifada and Mondoweiss.
“I urge any American Jew who is thinking about claiming their “Birthright” to face, rather than turn away from, the ongoing violences of colonial occupation and Zionist settlement that enable us to name Israel a Jewish homeland.”
